Frequently asked questions
Short answers only. The full instructions for dilution, purity, hygiene, and oils live on the guides linked under each question.
What is DMSO?
DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is an organic solvent, first made in 1866, and later produced from wood-pulp processing. It is studied because it can move through skin and carry other substances with it.
How does DMSO work?
It passes through tissue readily. Researchers have studied effects on inflammation, oxidation, pain signalling, and its use as a carrier for other compounds. Those accounts are still debated. This site does not treat them as a promise of treatment.
What is DMSO used for?
The library collects historical and practitioner protocols across pain, skin, digestion, nerves, and other topics. In the United States, the FDA has approved DMSO for interstitial cystitis only. Approval elsewhere is not the same thing as a personal recommendation.
Is DMSO safe to use?
Pharmaceutical or laboratory grade, clean skin, and a patch test are the baseline. Do not use industrial grade. Avoid DMSO in pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless a clinician is guiding you, and do not layer it over prescription creams, hormone creams, or medicated patches.
Why does DMSO cause a garlic smell or taste?
After DMSO is absorbed, the body can turn some of it into dimethyl sulfide, which smells of garlic or oysters on the breath and skin. Pure DMSO is described as odourless; the smell comes from that metabolite. It is widely reported as temporary, often for several hours. It is not a reason to ignore other symptoms. Stop and get advice if you feel unwell.
How do you dilute DMSO?
Dilution changes how fast DMSO absorbs and how warm it feels. The how-to page owns the ratios, the mixing order, and which diluents are appropriate. Do not take a percentage from a forum post and skip that page.
What are the side effects?
Common reports include the garlic-like odour, warmth, redness, dry skin, and — with oral use — nausea. Headache is reported occasionally. Allergic reactions and interactions with medicines need a clinician. Animal studies using very high doses reported eye-lens changes. That is a reason for caution, not a target for home use. Stop if irritation is severe or persistent. If you used too much, rinse, use plain aloe, and leave the skin alone for a couple of days before a lower strength. Itching is not a healing crisis. Breathing difficulty or facial swelling is an emergency: in South Africa, 10177 or 112.
Is a reaction to DMSO a healing crisis?
No. Warmth, brief redness, and a garlic-like smell are commonly reported. Redness that lasts, a blister, a rash, swelling, or feeling unwell is a reason to stop, not a sign to continue or to use more. Do not treat a reaction as proof that the DMSO is “working”.
Can I use DMSO with my medicines?
Do not put DMSO on skin that still has a steroid cream, hormone cream, prescription ointment, or medicated patch on it. DMSO can carry what is on the skin inward. A published review reports a serious interaction with sulindac. If you take any prescribed medicine, ask the prescriber first. This answer is not a full interaction list.
What about pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children?
Avoid DMSO in pregnancy and while breastfeeding unless a clinician is directing you. Do not use an adult strength on a child. The library notes for children are cautions. Head injury, a suspected fracture, or bruising without a clear cause needs medical care — in South Africa, 10177 or 112.
I have a sulfa allergy. Is that the same as a sulphite problem?
No. A sulfa (sulphonamide) antibiotic allergy is not the same thing as sensitivity to sulphites, the preservatives. DMSO is an organosulphur solvent. It is not a sulfa antibiotic and it is not a sulphite. That does not make it automatically suitable. Speak to a clinician if you have either history, and do not use industrial grade.
Is DMSO approved, and what about SAHPRA?
In the United States, the FDA has approved RIMSO-50, a 50% DMSO solution, for interstitial cystitis when a clinician instils it into the bladder. That is not approval for other uses, and it is not a home treatment. In South Africa, SAHPRA regulates medicines. Check the current register before you treat a product as registered. This site does not claim that a shop bottle of DMSO is SAHPRA-registered.
Is MSM the same as DMSO?
No. DMSO is a liquid solvent, used mostly on the skin. It carries other substances through the skin and is associated with a garlic-like smell on the breath. MSM (methylsulfonylmethane, also called DMSO2) is the crystalline sulphur compound the body can make when it breaks DMSO down. It is sold as a powder or capsules to swallow. It is not a carrier in the same way, and it has little of that smell. They are related and they are not interchangeable. Introduce one at a time. Taking them together, where books describe it, is on the how-to page, not in the library, and it is not a cancer, Lyme, or parasite treatment.
Can I use DMSO with essential oils?
Only inside the limits on the Oils page: topical use, never above 4% of the blend, a patch test first, and never by mouth or in a nebuliser. The how-to guide prefers hydrosols when someone wants a hint of rosemary or peppermint, because those essential oils are too strong to put on neat with DMSO.
How long does it take to notice anything?
DMSO is absorbed through the skin within minutes. Some people report a change in comfort within 15–30 minutes when something is acute, and over days or weeks when it is long-standing. Concentration, route, and the person all change that. It is not a guarantee.
Where can I buy pharmaceutical-grade DMSO?
Look for a bottle labelled pharmaceutical or laboratory grade, 99.9% or higher, in glass, with a purity statement. Health shops, compounding pharmacies, and some veterinary suppliers sell it. Confirm the grade yourself. Industrial DMSO can carry contaminants, and DMSO can carry those contaminants inward. The resources page only recommends what to look for. It does not sell DMSO.
Can I take DMSO orally?
Oral use needs dilution and guidance from a clinician. The how-to page says concentrations above 20% are not recommended, and it records the historical description of a half to one teaspoon in a full glass of water or juice. Do not start from this answer.
Does DMSO work for arthritis and pain?
Published results are mixed. DMSO has been studied for inflammation, and some people — and a lot of veterinary practice — report less discomfort. Some trials are modest, and responses differ. Read the library as information, and talk to a clinician if you already take pain medication.
